Snow Creek to tram -- who's on?

General Palm Springs area.

Postby Ellen » Wed Nov 11, 2009 3:24 pm

Howdy All :)

Excellent -- November 21 it is 8) I think two permits will do it -- one for the speedsters and one for the rest of us.

Z -- Thanks for the advice on pants and long-sleeves, I'll come prepared.

Just as with the double, I'll probably start earlier so that we get to the tram bar around the same time -- I have my priorities right

Howdy Hal :)

Thanks so much for doing the reconnaissance next Tuesday 8) If you're not bored of the trail after your trip, please consider joining us on Nov. 21.

I'm curious whether any of the streams on Fuller Ridge still have water and how badly the trail is overgrown. Even with pants and long sleeved shirt, I bleed pretty easily

Things to know that might help.

Posted 10/09/09: From Hwy 74 north the trail is easy to follow however there are several places with major sluff off and where plants have overgrown the trail. Water is available at Tahquitz Creek, Strawberry Cienaga, Deer Springs, and the San Jacinto River. The trail from Fuller Ridge Trailhead to Snow Creek is in very poor condition and I felt like I was "bushwacking" with all the overgrowth.

I used a northbound gps track and reversed it to create a profile of the trail and computer "ran it" a couple different ways. The first 15 miles will be climbing less than 500ft of elevation over each mile of distance. That is the same rate you see on Skyline going from 4000' to 4500' which takes a mile. The 15 mile spot is where you reach trees, Black Mountain Campground and the start of Fuller Ridge Trail.

The last word I got was that the creek at LRV campground is dry. I don't have current info about the spigot at Black Mountain Campground.

Snow Creek barrier gate to the Tram is 26.8 miles if you don't go to the summit. If no other water source is available between the start (DWA has a water spigot about 1 mile in) and the LRV Campground you will have to cover 24.8 miles to reach the RV water pipe.

Remember, the trail below Fuller Ridge is overgrown and similar to bushwacking.

I cleared the trail up to 7 miles coming out of the trailhead, but after that it's pesky. That was a year or so ago, so it's probably partially overgrown again, but shouldn't be bad.

Tina, it's the first exit off the 111 after you split off the 10 going toward Palm Springs. It's only about a mile after the split. Turn right, go up a couple miles til you come to Snow Creek Village, a small collection of homes. There will be a sign on the left that looks like something out of the Blair Witch Project. Park along that side of the road - do not turn and go down the road towards the trail. It's part of the village and water district property and they can be grouchy about it.

I'm looking forward to this already!

Howdy All :)

I was hoping to hike with Walt but he and Jean have other obligations on Nov 21.

I cannot keep up with Z, Tina, Steve, etc. Are any normal human beings  interested in hiking Snow Creek to the tram with me?

Not many of my friends call me "Normal" but I'm considering it, Bryan is thinking about it as well, I've done the down hike from Black Mountain Campground to the 10 Freeway back in December of 2006 and back then the trail was clear, must mean the PCTA folks have not had a chance to get out there to do a trim job.

What time were you thinking? It will be very dark as the New Moon will be five nights before we start, the lower trail is easy to follow, I'd say easier than the Skyline. :D

Postby Cy Kaicener » Wed Nov 11, 2009 6:12 pm

Ellen - We so called "normal" human beings cant keep up with you :)
I would have trouble handling that kind of mileage at my pace unless I took a full back pack which does not sound like a good idea.
