Snow Creek to tram -- who's on?

Postby Ellen » Wed Nov 11, 2009 12:30 pm

Howdy All :)

This hike has been discussed in several other threads -- it deserves its own thread.

Z-dude, Walt, and Hal have mentioned a desire to do this trek. I'd like to do it as well.

The faster folks such as Z-dude, Steve (Bluerail), Tina, Ze (etc.) can walk/jog the route.

I will be hiking the route -- my seven spinal fusions don't allow running. I'm pretty sure that Walt and Hal will be hiking as well. Kathy W -- are you interested?

I'm not the master of organization that Z-chick (Tina) is, but we'll want to get going on this before the snow falls.

Suggested dates?

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

Love to! Let's see, maybe 11/21? It's 31 miles of beautifully graded trail. Some don't like it because it takes so long to do what C2C does in maybe 17, but I think it's a wonderful trail.

I could go this weekend or next, but Walt and I were talking about scouting the Mission Creek trail this weekend, so the 21st would be best if we can.

Incidentally, from about mile 7 to mile 9, the trail is rather overgrown with brush that will scratch the heck out of you. Even if you're not going to wear them the rest of the trip, bring long pants and a long sleeved shirt for that section.

Let's do this, I've been looking forward to it for a couple of years now!

Ps If you have a camera with a strong zoom lens, it's fun to look directly down from the peak to your car in Snow Creek. That might make a great picture, but it would take a good zoom to be able to spot the vehicle from 10000 feet up!

Probably a little more than doing Skyline twice. I'm at work right now so I can't give you the exact numbers, but I think it burned about 9000 when I did it before. Skyline is usually around 3500 each time. So, in a word, YES!

Can you get the whole group in? That would be great!

if a few peeps go we might want to consider meeting/parking at the bottom of the tram station-meaning the visitor center and call a cab to drop us off. i know its sketchy getting through there, don't want to piss anyone off.

You're thinking about the north face route starting at Snow Creek. We'll be on the PCT, totally legal, and I've even stopped and chatted with the water district guy and several of the residents as well. This one is so legal, even FIGHT ON would have done it! (I miss that guy.)

Anyway, yes, candy candy candy! This is big, but you've done the double, so you're in shape for it.

State Park

Postby lilbitmo » Wed Nov 11, 2009 2:36 pm

It's easy to forget when going from the PCT into the state park but Permits will be needed and if folks are going at different speeds you will need more than one just to keep the rangers happy, they were fairly upset with at least four people on Saturday for not having them, "Thru Hikers" usually are exempt if they are just going from the PCT to the Summit then back to the PCT but in this case everyone would be crossing the whole park.

Does anyone know if "Black Mountain Truck Road" is open? Or will be.

As a safety measure someone could possible drive up there (the truck road to the campground) and be waiting for everyone to come through and offer up extra water and snacks, just a thought, the road cuts right across the PCT at 8,200 feet next to the campgrounds up there, that's mile number 17 on the upward trek? And they could be waiting with Permits so no one would have to go out of there way to get them?

Just food for thought. :D

Wow! If someone would do that, it would be awesome. I had to take the tram up the day before to get the permit last time. Seemed kinda dumb - I like the self issue availability right by Marion and at the top of the Tram. For Snow Creek, there is no nearby source. Are they available through mail/fax like San G permits?
