The Inevitable Question after November 7th...

Postby zippetydude » Tue Nov 10, 2009 12:48 pm

I know everybody is probably still sore (at least I am!) so it may be too early to ask this, but...

By next year, do you think you could do one more than you did this year?

Closely related, but a practical question as well: Would you want to try?

I know I don't want to do the same number again. It was hard. And it hurt. A lot. But the lure of a new goal entices us all, so I'm wondering...

...for everyone on the 1 time list - wanna try two?
...for everyone on the 2 times list - wanna try three?
...for everyone on the 3 times list - wanna drink beer and watch some other poor fool do three?

Seriously, for the 3's and fast 2's, I think 4 is possible, but we'd have to be willing to finish around 2:00 a.m. or so.

What do you think?

Tally so far: Possible Yes: 1 Absolute No: 1

Hmmm...I think that 1 will be fine for me. Forever.

The day after I made a list of things that worked, things that didn't work and new things to try. I also posted a picture of each of the 3peaters and vowed to step up my game. My lack of speed creates timing issues so this is where my work begins.

I was thinking of Cy's post a while back about the guy who did Shasta and set some kind of record. I think it was 37K+ in 24 hours and he would ski down then start again. Is that even possible on Skyline? 4 times would be 33K and getting close. Of you speedsters who did 3, what was what was the fastest time? I think Ricks TR said he finished at 9:45pm. Did he start at 2pm? 18-19 hrs?

Of course I was only thinking of all this for you guys. I'm not that CRAZY! :D

I hope to see you do a 4th Zip! I know for me the math doesn't work so I can't see myself being able to do it. My time estimates for the 3 ascents that I did was dead-on (for me). 5 to 5.5 hrs for the first 2 ascents and 6 to 6.5 for the 3rd. So I got 3 ascents in 19 hours. That leaves 5 hours. It takes an hour to get back down to the museum trailhead. That only leaves 4 hours for a 4th ascent. Each time takes longer and for me if I could even pull it off I think I would require 7.5 hours or more.

You on the other hand may just have what it takes.

Of course I'm only thinking about doing it inside 24 hours so removing that restriction a 4th is far more reasonable.

I'm not sure I'll ever be able to pysch myself up for something like that however. Three was pretty much my limit and I don't see myself getting any stronger/faster.

Hmmmmm. I'll say maybe. Presently I'm actually not that excited about doing it twice, but if I hang around this board I might very well get caught up in the enthusiasm because that sort of thing rubs off on me extremely easily.

There are other routes that I need to do. I want to do Skyline up and down, and I also want to do a full C2C2C. Also, one of my dreams for a while has been to thru-hike from Idyllwild to Palm Springs, or the other way around. But I always imagined that the tram would be part of the equation. Now I know that it doesn't have to be.

I have plenty of conditioning to do before any of these happen, but we're talking next year. A girl can dream, right?

I was hoping to do Gorgonio 3x this weekend but looks like it's gonna be quite a bit colder than I'd like. Might postpone that till next year.

SJ: You go girl! I have a feeling we'll be seeing you again!

Tina: If you're thinking PR, I'd do a short, hard run this weekend, no more than an hour, then only very brief (20 minutes MTW, 15 on Thursday) intense elliptical or stair master work next week. Next Friday, nothing. A week from Saturday, go for the PR. You haven't let your legs heal fully if you go too soon, so the PR may fizzle. Just a little time of reduced distance and increased intensity may really help. Ask Ellen about this idea, she knows much more than I do, but it really helps me.

Rick: Play with the math! I think there's a "coefficient of ease" that can be calculated based on a person's fastest time. If we can get our best time down to 3:15, maybe 3:00, then we could take an hour longer than that, which would then feel easy, on each run and still make four laps, even if we need a bit longer on the last one.
Start 3:30, Tram at 7:45, down by 8:30, museum by 9:00. Half hour break.
Start 9:30, Tram at 1:45, down at 2:30, museum by 3:00. Hour break
Start 4:00, Tram at 8:15, down at 9:00, museum by 9:30. Hour break
Start 10:30, Tram at 3:29:59.

That's factoring in 45 minutes from Grubb's Notch to the lower tram station in case we get there just after the tram leaves each time. It's also factoring in optional breaks - we could always just go ahead and start and take 4:45, 5:15 and 5:15 on the last 3 attempts.

This past weekend my times were 4:19, 5:30 and 4:58. I intentionally killed time on the second one to keep from burning out my legs, but the last one was everything I had - I could not have done a 4th one without a break and reduced pace afterward.

I'm not in bad shape now, but I think I could get this flabby old body to move a little faster, and it would feel easier if I lost about 10 pounds off this gut.

Anyway, it's fun to play with the math! It's always easy on paper!

By the way, which trail were you going to triple on? And hey, don't you take a break man?
