I know that it's variable, but I would like to know when there is usually a good amount of snow? I want to practice snow shelter building for emergencys, and becasue i am teaching it to scouts... So when is there usually a good layer of snow on San Jac?

Mid January is probably going to have a good layer of snow, but it is as you say highly variable. Some years, we've got good snow by Thanksgiving, other years by Christmas, other years MLK, Jr. day. Some years not enough snow to do much of anything. Other years 9' deep at Dry Lake.
