For the people that are doing the back to back the day of, i was thinking of having croissants, orange slices, bananas, water and Gatorade waiting for us at the bottom of the tram (my parents will have with them when they pick us up). i figure that is a good mix of things to process before round 2. anyone have any special requests?

Scottmac: Nice. Still, shouldn't there be some blood on it, or some other visible sign of suffering? (JK) Seems like a fun way to commemorate the occasion.

Tina: That sounds like a good idea to me.

Here's a thought/question for you: It sounds like people will probably end up waiting at the notch, rooting for each suffering soul as they finish their second time up. Anyone got a guitar they wanna bring? It might be fun while we hold vigil to have some music, maybe sing some camping songs together.

Anyway, just a thought. I don't know if anyone else likes that sort of thing. Comments?

I can bring my hand-held HAM radio on the hike if Jim Bakos and the other RMRU people have a frequency they can monitor. It would be one more set of eyes and ears on the trail if someone ends up needing help. (It could be me!)

ok, i've been biting my lip long enough. a reminder, the Sheriff's aviation unit is NOT a personal taxi service. keep in mind, they are not available 100% of the time and/or they may be delayed for hours.

Calling 911, RMRU, or the Park Service should not be your Plan A. While they are there to help when needed, it could be HOURS before they respond. (It was 5 or more hours before RMRU was even called out for the stranded marines on Skyline, another 3-4 hours for them to get on scene and hike down to the marines, no helicopter rescue, just a long, painful slog up the trail in temps that went from hot to hypothermic.)

please, do not attempt a back-to-back if you are not fully prepared for it. carry the 10 essentials. If you do not know what the 10 essentials are, you probably shouldn't be doing this back-to-back. be prepared to spend the night should you bonk or become disabled.

a hike like this can be extremely dangerous. don't get caught up in the enthusiasm. know your limits and respect them.

oh... it just now dawned on me, Nov 7 is RMRUs training weekend and they will be out of the County. great.

i hope everyone has a safe hike that day (and everyday). best of luck to all.

FYI-the plan is to hike and challenge ourselves, NOT TO BECOME STATISTICS. for the most part we try to have fun, of course putting safety first.

for the record....
