Jean Peak

I'm heading up on Sunday and would like to bag Jean Peak, but I've never done it before. Research seems to indicate it's mostly cross country bush whacking stuff. Any input on markers/landmarks to set me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

The easiest approach for me has been to go to the last trail marker just below the Ski Hut below the summit of San Jacinto on the main trail, then cut due south through that saddle that separates Jean and San J., it's not that much bush whacking that way, once you've hit the summit there's a trail register can (Red if I remember correctly) hidden in the rocks. From there you can go slightly northeast boulder hopping all the way down to the main trail about a mile below the summit (roughly) then turn right and head down the main trail to Wellmans Divide.

There are other ways to get there but this one will be the easiest.

Have fun.

Karen, I agree with the above response. To that, I would add that there is some rock scrambling, generally class 2 (use of hands for balance but not for actual climbing). I've found when heading to the summit, staying a bit to the left seems like the slightly easier approach. Any approach is doable.

The forested area between Jean and Marion is well worth a visit as is Marion itself. The summit block is easy class 3 (well, I've seen a lot of non-climbers do it). You can climb the summit block from either the north or the south, but the north side IMHO is the eaiser of the two. You climb on some boulders on the NE corner of summit block. Then you find a ledge that allows you to traverse right (west). You then pick up a wide and obvious crack that you can ascend. At the top of the crack, you mantle up on to the rock. Cool stuff.
