HOLY COW! 123 DEGREES F air temp and they were hiking!!?

Unbelievable!

I read a book about Death Valley history and there was a whole chapter on records temps. When they set the 136 degree North American record near Furnace Creek the ranger said it was dangerous just walking out to the thermometer. He said he soaked a towel with water and wrapped it around his head like a turban. When he got back inside from simply taking the temperature the towel was dry.

Doreen who lives near the Museum trail head says that "some of the guys are still doing Skyline now". Maybe they haven't been reading this forum or the papers.

Steve mentioned that there was a heat related rescue at Flatrock yesterday of a first timer. Does anyone know any details about it?

Cy, All I know is that coming back from the peak Craig told me that they were on their way down to get a guy from flatrock who had run out of water and cramped up bad. While back up there on sunday I talked to one of the Rangers involved, and he said they first made contact with the guy around 12 on sat and finished getting him up around 6 or so.

Thanks Steve - It sounds like they managed to hike him up (very slowly) after giving him water.
