North Skyline Trailhead (W Chino Dr)

General Palm Springs area.

Disregard my earlier comment. I was thinking you meant Vista Chino, Not Chino. I used to go up from Chino when i was a kid before those houses were there. You can get up from the north from the corner of Crescent and Monte Vista via a very steep scramble. Nice parking area too. I think it's the shortest way to the Skyline.

Just below the tip of the A is the impressive gate and B is my favorite spot in PS, the O'Donnell Overlook (my name)

Nice golf course you have.

I like looking at different routes up to the tram and think that there should be one from north end of Lykken at Chino Cyn that goes up to about 5,000ft or so and ties in there. As the weather cools down I intend to explore it a few more times.

Actually, O'Donnell is not my name; what I meant is that is what I call that O'Donnell overlook - I don't know if it has a real name.

Interesting. I have an old map at home that shows a trailhead there as well, but have never looked for it. On the Museum "loop", right below the "English Tom" memorial plaque, you can see the trail descending down.

Here's an old render I made, complete with a red line to remind me to check on this tail (never did).

The trail you are refering to leads down to the discussed location. It also leads back into the canyon behind the dam and over to the nothern end of the Lykken Trail in Little Tuscany.

I went there yesterday and posted the info on my blog.

What I did was hike from the Museum Trail over to the other Skyline. It goes down to the houses in the picture and another fork looks like it goes down to the street. I didn't go that far.

The trail is in really good shape and is different than the Lykken where is goes down the Tachevah Canyon.

North Skyline trailhead

For anyone going back down Skyline to the museum, if you pass a big "M" painted on a rock, this is a warning that its not the correct trail. It is just above the picnic tables past a Tom Cavanaugh metal memorial plaque. The M looks like the MacDonalds M which is curved on top.

I just hiked it and was surprised to find that it not only goes all the way to the road, but also that the trail starts in an empty dirt lot off the street where you can park, and doesn't require trespassing or climbing over any fences. It's right under the rock pile with the green house perched on it, and close to the yellow wall. Pretty easy to spot if you're looking for it.

I went up the museum trail as usual, then down the other side past the English Tom plaque. If you're going up it, the first short section is very narrow and very steep. But it's less than 100m after which the trail is in great shape, is easy to follow, and is much gentler than the museum trail. A very nice discovery.

Best to keep this on the down low. If a lot of hikers start frequenting the area the neighbors will get up tight. That how it is in PS, unfortunately. It is a nice alternative to the Museum Trail, which I think is awful. There are so many short cuts on it you never know when you're on the trail and it's in the worst shape of any trail out here.

I hike this trail several days a week and know that it is well traveled, judging by the people I run into, and by the fact that the trail is well worn. I don't believe the trail crosses any private property.
