Baldy Village to Wrightwood and back. 8-8-09

I figured since I'd done the north backbone a few times recently it would get easier. no chance. pictures - map
I also figured it was going to be a lot cooler than last Sunday so I didn't carry any extra water. It was but it started to warm up (hey! not supposed to do that today mr weather man!) after I got to Pine so I started to conserve water, Big Mistake. dehydration. I was afraid I wouldn't have enough on the way back up to Baldy. I felt great all the way to the end of the Acorn Trail but on the way back up it was really getting hot. And I suffered all the way back up to Baldy. Once on top I stopped rationing and drank a lot more and soon felt great on the way down!
It took a long time but I did make it! 28.6 miles. 16 hours and 50 minutes! I drank and ate only what I carried though. And no red bull, no caffeine or other related drug/stimulant products. :D

Wow - Thats quite a trip. What was the total elevation gain and how much (or how little) water did you take.? Are you trying to get in shape for Cactus to Clouds?

Ya know I'm not sure how that's figured. Don't you just add all the differences in peaks and valleys up?, since I went back the same way? It looks like 11,200 feet to me.
There's some steep parts north of Baldy.
I took about 8 liters. But didn't hydrate well enough beforehand. again.
I did the same hike on last Sunday but turned around at Pine. I was still sore on Thursday. :? But couldn't pass up what was supposed to be really cool weather on Saturday. So I took the same amount of water. Not enough for me.
I'm very slow on uphills, and the part north of Baldy has lots of that stuff. It was funny watching myself walk soooo sloooooooow back up to Baldy. pretty pathetic! :D Can't wait to try it again!

Thanks!
I really believe I can do this way faster. Gotta carry more water though, enough so that I don't have to be afraid to run out. It really backfired on me. Felt so gooooood gulping the rest of the way down to the village from baldy! Hey, and I beat your time! 2:25! oh, that's right, you did that going up. :(
how do you figure more than 12 + ?
I got way less than that.

from the start, guaranteed 10k +, 6k village to baldy, 4k wrightwood to baldy

addiing ups and downs along north backbone, definitely more than 6k out and back for that part.

From Baldy going north you go down 1200 feet to the saddle.
Then go up 700 to Daswon, down 400 and up 500 to Pine, down 1400 to the parking lot, level along the PCT and then down 1700 on the Acorn Trail to Camp Mariastella.
There's a little more up and downs between all these #s that add a little so maybe it is 12 overall. But not much.
one things for sure, it's gotta be harder than ski hut x3 and bear flat x2 which are both 12.
