Vivian Creek tomorrow

Postby Florian » Thu Jul 02, 2009 2:22 pm

I have fallen into possession of a 12 person permit for Friday for the Vivian Creek trail. Seems a shame to use it all by myself and let 11 slots go to waste. If anyone wants to tag along i'm planning to be at the trailhead around 7am.

Hi Florian. Thanks for the generous offer. That's not the first time I've said that to you - I'm noticing a pattern here!

Hey, there's no stipulation that we have to leave at the same time to be on the same permit. There's a very slight chance that I'll be able to go in to work a little late - if I leave at first light, I can probably be back down about 9:00.

So.....If I can go and get asked for a permit, is it okay if I tell him I'm on your permit?

Also, if we see each other on the trail, I'll be the fool running along in triathlon clothes like he got lost in the middle of a race. It would be fun to meet in person and talk for a little bit while we're out there. Thanks again for the offer.

So Zip, i watched for you all day on the trail but no luck. Did you go ninja on me and you passed by without my seeing you?

But i had a great hike without you! Started at 7am and got to the summit in 3 hours 45 minutes. It's been many years since i hiked the Vivian Creek trail and i really enjoyed it. A fair number of people on the trail today right before the holiday but not what i'd call crowded. I was asked to show my permit twice, once going up and once again coming down, to different rangers. Nice water at High Creek. And the hike down is really harder than going up. My poor feet. The picnic area at the trailhead was very busy when i got down too.

Today's hike marks a mini-milestone for me... Climbing the highest peaks in Riverside (San Jac on Monday), Los Angeles (Baldy on Wednesday), and San Bernardino (San G today) counties all in one week. (5 days actually.) Of course someone will now post about having done all 3 peaks in one day!! :-/

Only took a few pictures .. http://www.flickr.com/photos/fboyd/sets ... 88/detail/

My GPS says the round trip from the upper parking lot to San G and back via Vivian Creek trail was exactly 19 miles. That would be 9.5 miles one way. Coming down was harder, and took longer, than going up.

Hi Florian. Unfortunately, it was only a slim chance to begin with, and didn't pan out. On the other hand, nice job on your fun 5 days. Actually, I think you did it just right - I think it's more fun with a day of recovery in between, so great job and it sounds like you had some fun too. Sorry we didn't have the chance to meet.

I'm hoping to get a chance to get out there tomorrow morning if my lazy butt will get up early. See you one of these days out on the trail!
