Marion Mountain from Suicide Rock?

Postby » Thu Jun 25, 2009 5:13 pm

I was considering starting at Humber Park and adding Suicide Rock into a San Jacinto peak loop plan. I'd like to get to Marion Mt from Suicide Rock in an efficient manner (less miles). I notice some hps routes but they do not seem direct... is it possible to follow ridgelines up to Marion, or is it too brushy / cliffy, etc... ?

thanks

You can find ways around most of it, but the brush gets real thick and boulders in spots. Why start at Humber and not deer springs or Marion Mtn Trail? check your mailbox

thanks for the maps :)

definitely does not look like a good idea to head straight up.

might be a lot of miles and 8500+ ft gain for the loop. or from the tram for only 4500-5000 ft gain...maybe just better to save time and distance.

Hey Ze,

What peaks are you thinking? what would be confirmed peaks and what is open for possibilities?

Hey Zé! Cool idea, even if the plans need to be revised to avoid bushwhacking.

I like your xc ideas, so I thought I'd run this past you: What do you think about doing a direct climb of the south face of San G?

If we can get above the brush, and I have heard there are old roads that go pretty much up to that point, then the entire hike would be with no trail, just a full frontal assault. Could be tough, and I bet it's a number of very strenuous miles. What do you think?

i'm doing the 7 around Jacinto. they should not be a problem to get to; however a few of them will require some class 3 rock climbing, so depending on our speed some people may / may not climb every peak (Cornell and Miller I think) if they don't want to deal with the rocks.

to do those, i was thinking of taking the tram up and down. that would make the hike 4500-5000 ft gain and 12-13 miles.

or we could start in idlywild, making the hike 8500 ft gain and more miles (maybe 20)? i wouldn't mind doing that normally, except the rock climbing stuff will slow us down. so maybe just start at the tram?

the hps peaks site mentions this...looks like 1500' of climbing from the mill creek jumpoff up to the ridge...at that point you would connect with the upper steep part of vivian creek trail.

if you wanted to start further east that than, i dunno...i think my friend Ryan was concocting something similar a year ago, i should find that route...

I'm with Ryan, I'm thinking further east. Kind of a direct route looking up from the 10 fwy. I'll have to look at it directly from the fwy where I was plotting the attempt, but I'm thinking of no trail, just an old fashioned suicide mission. I'll post more later when I've got a pic or some topo info.

is that picture taken looking above the PCT toward marion?

does anyone know about the terrain north of Suicide Rock? If I can at least ascend from Suicide Rock to the PCT, that would be great.

Suicide Rock

Ze, there's a trail that leads from the PCT to Suicide Rock on the top side.

If you are talking about doing the 7 summits I guessing you mean, St. Jack, Jean, Newton Drury, Marion, Miller, Cornell and the one just to the North West of San Jacinto?

I've done various versions of that, the route I took was Tram to Summit of San J., the over to Newton Drury, Marion, Jean and back cross country to Miller and Cornell - but I did not cover the one to the north east, the name is slipping me right now. I have to run, I will look it up later. But you could try the direct route up Devils Slide to Marion at the turn shown in the picture by hvydrt, you'd have to catch the PCT at strawberry junction and then go east for one mile or so then head uphill.

Good luck and let us know how it worked out?
