I'll be there. 6AM at the Mill Creek Ranger Station parking lot, or 6:45AM at the SB Peak trailhead? Probably bring a cooler full of beverages - gotta keep hydrated, right? :)

Sorry for the tardy response, but I wasn't sure I could commit until now. So, count me in!

I'm also highly experienced at visiting a local deli counter.... :D

Hey Zip,

Gotta make a slight change-Salad's too complicated for food-preparation-challenged people like me. It's the lettuce that's throwing me for a loop... So I'm switiching the salad out for a veggie tray.

I also have a couple questions: What kind of temps are typical on this hike? Do I need a jacket? How much water should we bring? Or is there drinkable water on the trail? And is there anything else you can think of that I shoud know?

Thanks again for arranging this for us!!! See you soon!

Temps for the weekend (courtesy of NOAA's "weather.com"):

Looks like we'll get drenched in sunshine, so bring a hat & sunscreen and leave the down parka at home.

Water: Depends on how far you get. Water available from a spring at Limber Pine Bench. Probably want to treat/filter the water (I do).

Thanks for the info. Phydeux! It's really helpful having an idea of what to expect from new hiking terrain.
And Mark, of course I have trash bags! Want one? I think they really suit you!

Here's the scoop. It's usually cool but not actually cold in the early morning, ending up comfortable but not hot by late morning.

Water is available at Limber Pine Spring. I have never filtered it and never gotten sick (including last weekend) but I know a lot of people that do filter it. You may want to go that far up, you may not, but on a cool morning, I usually bring about 1 liter and it's more than enough for me on a round trip to the peak.

To decide upon a turnaround time, I always figure my time coming down to be 2/3 my time going up. So, if we start at the trailhead at exactly 6:30 and at 3 hours you're at Limber Pine Bench, figure two hours to get back down, putting you back at the car in 5 hours, or about 11:30. Usually works pretty well for me, but I have no idea how well it might work for others!

A simple trick for remembering the elevation:
San B Trailhead is at 6 zero (6000')
Wilderness Boundary 7 one (7100')
Manzanita Flat is at 8 two (8200')
Limber Pine Bench is 9 three (9300')
Stone Bench up top 10 four (10,400)

The Wilderness Boundary is 1.5 miles
The opening to Manzanita Flat is 3.0 miles
The trail junction on the far side of Manzanita flat is 4.0 miles
Limber Pine Bench is approximately 6 miles
Stone bench view point is 7 miles
Actual peak is 8 miles
Tina, if you want to get in extra distance, San G is 18 miles each way!

That's all the data I can fit in my head, so that's all I can tell you on the spur of the moment. By the way, veggies are fine!

See you all soon.

Howdy All :)

Looking forward to the hike and potluck at Z's 8) I love Z's method for remembering mileage and elevation. I've also found that it takes about 2/3 of the climbing time to go back down on this trail.

I'm considering starting earlier (say 5:30 to 6 AM) so that I can wave at the faster folks as they fly by  It usually takes me two hours to get to the wooden bench, three hours to the stone bench, and 3.5 hours to the summit.

I'm bringing my molasses wheat bread, chocolate chip peanut butter cookies, and REAL beer (White Hawk IPA and perhaps a Delerium Tremens for Z).

Miles of smiles,
Ellen
