Here's the scoop. It's usually cool but not actually cold in the early morning, ending up comfortable but not hot by late morning.
Water is available at Limber Pine Spring. I have never filtered it and never gotten sick (including last weekend) but I know a lot of people that do filter it. You may want to go that far up, you may not, but on a cool morning, I usually bring about 1 liter and it's more than enough for me on a round trip to the peak.
To decide upon a turnaround time, I always figure my time coming down to be 2/3 my time going up. So, if we start at the trailhead at exactly 6:30 and at 3 hours you're at Limber Pine Bench, figure two hours to get back down, putting you back at the car in 5 hours, or about 11:30. Usually works pretty well for me, but I have no idea how well it might work for others!
A simple trick for remembering the elevation:
San B Trailhead is at 6 zero (6000')
Wilderness Boundary 7 one (7100')
Manzanita Flat is at 8 two (8200')
Limber Pine Bench is 9 three (9300')
Stone Bench up top 10 four (10,400)
The Wilderness Boundary is 1.5 miles
The opening to Manzanita Flat is 3.0 miles
The trail junction on the far side of Manzanita flat is 4.0 miles
Limber Pine Bench is approximately 6 miles
Stone bench view point is 7 miles
Actual peak is 8 miles
Tina, if you want to get in extra distance, San G is 18 miles each way!
That's all the data I can fit in my head, so that's all I can tell you on the spur of the moment. By the way, veggies are fine!
See you all soon.
