crazy

Postby FIGHT ON » Thu Jun 18, 2009 8:17 am

So, at the end of my hike on Saturday, as soon as I reached Cloud Burst Summit, I walk across ACH and immediately collapse my poles, take my pack and hat off, change my shirt and stand at the trail head parking area near the west bound lane in hopes to get a lift to La Canada.
Within a minute a bright red suv comes from the east.
I'm tired and excited to see the driver slow down and pull over toward me.
But my excitement turns to surprise as I realize that the driver, who turns out to be a young woman, IS ALONE!
When she rolls down the window the first thing that comes out of my mouth is, "Are you crazy!?"
I was very polite but very serious.
Her response, just blew my mind..... "Well you have an honest face."
An honest face? An honest face........ !!!!!!!!! I look down and shake my head, walk over and lean on the passenger door sill and reply, "An honest, FACE?????????" Image
and then she puts a cherry on top and says, "ya". (like duh!)
I couldn't help thinking if this were my own daughter.
I tell her where I'm headed and she says she can only take me to the Newcomb motorcycle hang out.
So I put my pack in the back seat and jump in the front with her little dog.
Don't get me wrong, I was very grateful for the ride but....????
I often pick up hikers and give rides.
I have hitched rides several times and sometimes I wait for a long, long time so I wasn't about to pass this one up.
Usually it's a guy or a couple but never have I seen a young woman alone, pulling over to pick up a stranger.

On the way I politely start asking some obvious questions...
"Don't you think picking up strange men might be a little dangerous?"
It was like she had never considered it.
Turns out she is 30, AND, had been camping at buckhorn, ALONE!
On her way to find a land line so she can call her friend to join her camping.
So I asked her if she ever considered that maybe it might be a little dangerous camping alone. She said that she had recently camped in some other state alone for a week or so and was comforted because there were a group of Marines in the next campsite! Yey! Said her dad approved! Wow I'd like to have a word or two with him!
She dropped me off and promised not to pick up strangers while alone any more.

Oh ya and within 10 minutes I got another ride the rest of the way! :D

That is crazy...there are still some people out there very naive to the world, can't say that is a bad or good thing really. too bad we all can't live in that world of giving people the benefit of the doubt.

If you take this discussion, and related ones, seriously, you have to consider the fact that hitchhiking is dangerous period. Plenty of good-sized guys, both drivers and passengers, have been hurt or killed. It is undoubtedly true that it is riskier for women, but the fact remains that FIGHT ON is a person who chooses to pursue a dangerous practice and then turns around and criticizes others because he thinks their risk is larger. Besides, it may be that a guy with an honest face is in more danger than a woman.

I doubt it although I did just finish pulling my clean shirt over my head when I saw the red suv coming. Naw. too far away! and besides, if you saw the nipple man would you pull over?? Got to go with what was said. (my honest face!)  :?
But after she stopped I walked away and got another ride! (with three veteran hikers, two of whom I met on my first summit of Baldy a few years ago!)

They passed by but turned around because................anyone anyone?..................... they remembered,,, my "HONEST FACE!"  Image
I don know though, when you think about it, could you say no to this cuddly wuddly fluff of an honest face? Huh? well, could you??
I didn't think so...
