"Is everyone good with the Limber Pine/Washington Monument/San Bernardino Peak alternative?"

Zip,

I'm very impressed with your party planning skills! It's clear that you have really thought this through. Great idea about the 3 hikes-I like that idea better than Vivian as well as the "driveway" hike!

Yes on the revised hike plan. Do I understand that to be a hike that goes basically on the same trail but to 3 different altitudes or locations? Either way still yes on the hike plan.

I understand the tentative date to be Saturday, June 27th.

I understand that no Lite Beer is allowed.

June 27 sounds good.

Just throwing this out there, but if the SB Peak trail quota is filled, maybe try Sugarloaf Peak? 10 - 11 miles round trip. Not in the SGW, but a shorter hike and decent views from the summit. I'll bet a few folks have never been up to its summit.

Okay, keepin' it simple. Looks like we're going with

June 27th, 2009, going up San Bernardino Peak Trail.

To help everyone finish by, say, noon, I suggest we meet at the ranger station at Bryant and Hwy 38 at 5:00. Angelus Oaks is just about 15-20 minutes from the ranger station, so we can get an early start - say 5:30. I'll reserve a couple of permits, each one is good for up to 12, so we'll be fine. (If these times are too early to start or too late to start eating and drinking, let me know.)

When going in a group, I usually find we all mix and match as we go along - speeds and desired distances vary. As I mentioned earlier, this trail has several nice spots where people may just stop for a snack, relax a bit, and turn around from there.

For those who like to go fast, the peak is easily doable in 3 hours, which would still allow a return time before noon. For those ailing or just feeling like an easy day...

Limber Pine Bench or the Stone Bench at 6 and 7 miles respectively, offer better views even though they're shorter.

I hadn't mentioned it previously, but there's even a nice place, Manzanita Flat, that stretches from mile 3 to mile 4 of the trail with virtually no incline. It's a wonderful place to slow down and just enjoy the walk, then sit and relax at the trail junction to Columbine at mile 4. This could be another turnaround spot, depending on how people feel.

We can all return together,if that's fine with everyone, arriving at my place at noon. This would also give anyone not hiking a specific arrival time to shoot for.

I'll start the sign up list now, so I hope everyone is ready to go!

Howdy Z,

Fantastic -- I love the San Bernardino Peak trail 8)

I'll make sure Walt gets to the peak so he has no excuses about not bringing his award-winning Q

Oh and I'll also bring some GOOD beer (AKA NOT lite beer). Belgium's Delerium Tremens (8.6% alcohol) should work well after a hike...

Miles of smiles,
Ellen
