Proposed State Wide Park Closures

Postby jctail » Mon Jun 01, 2009 9:00 am

Good morning fellow hikers,

I'm not one to usually post but I have used this board for valuable information and would like to say a quick thanks to those who post and moderate on this message board.

So I'm reading the news this morning and this article comes across my computer from surfline.com (Surfer first hiker second :). At first I was in awe of how many beaches our politicians want to close. Which seems nuts to me as they generate revenue for the state through tourism. As I parsing through the list I quickly realize they are talking parks not just beaches. Guess what park is on the list? Yep, San J. While I certainly don't need the tram up I sure as hell want it going down :)

I'm attaching a url to the post for sending a letter to our state politicians. There is a Legislature's Budget Conference Committee meeting tomorrow. So, if your going to send something today is the day.

Thanks for you time,

-John

p.s. I did my first C2C on May 23 after two previous attempts last year that only got me to the tram.

You might want to re-read what's proposed in regard to the State beaches; from what i ca find, it'll eliminate lifeguard an some other services during the winter season, and not a complete closure of the beaches (how would they do that, anyway?). With regard to the San J. State Wilderness, it'll probably cutbacks in services similar to what's being propsed for the state beaches, and not a complete closure.

If you're going to send a letter to a State Legislator, make sure you personnalize it and DO NOT send in that 'stock' letter on the Surfrider's website. Nothing says "I don't really care" more than a stock letter; no personal thought, no reasoning for opposing the legislation, and no alternatives. How would you feel if you got an avalanche of e-mails and letters that all said the same thing? Better to send a letter with a personal touch that gives a legislator some ideas for alternatives and you'll get more notice.
3 of the 5 voices in my head are telling me to "Go for it!"
