Trail Report for Devils Slide (Humber Park) on 5/16

It was awesome! Minimal snow, perfect weather, beautiful scenery, met a friendly volunteer ranger - more to come tomorrow when I'm not exhausted anymore! :)

O.K. So we started of from Humber park at 9:45 am. A little later than we had planned, but hey, things happen. It was around 60 degrees when we left, and the great weather lasted the entire day. The scenery was beautiful. I was worried that there might be too much snow on the trail, but it wasn't a problem at all. We had to tromp through a little bit, but it was fun. We even made a little snowman. May he R.I.P. :) We also came upon a huge boulder being supported by a tree stump, which looked way cool. It took us about 6 hours to get to the peak. We met a friendly volunteer ranger about 2 miles from the top during one of our rest stops. Some of the hiking was more difficult than I thought it would be - I'm an out of shape soccer player. Its motivated me to get back in shape though. The peak was very cool. I loved the view. We had a late lunch up there and then headed back down. Going back down was much faster. There were more switchbacks than I thought there would be. I think someone on the trail told us there were something like 47. The views as the sun was going down were great. Unfortunately, I hadn't broken in my boots well enough, so the return trip was a little painful due to some blisters. We finished the hike around 7:45 pm. It was a great trail and I definitely recommend it. Take plenty of water though if you do this trail! I drank a ton and it wasn't that hot. I'd imagine that I would have needed a lot more if it had been warmer.

I'll have a link to some pictures once I upload them.

Devil's Slide Humber Park

Thanks for the trip report, can you give more details on the snow? and the trail? Did you have to climb over snow or was it just a foot or soon here and there, or patches?

Do you remember the name of the Voluteer? I met the nicest guy in the world out there one winter day named, Andy from San Diego - we tried to make it to the fire outlook on Tahquitz but none of us had crampons, only snow shoes and it was way to icy to continue just above Lilly Rock area.

Look forward to the pictures and the update.

Thanks

I finally got pictures up at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jcm81/sets ... 301634407/. Unfortunately, none of the pictures give you a good idea of the trail conditions. The snow was just patches in certain spots at higher elevation. It was not bad at all on the trail. No ice at all. We had a few people in our group without hiking poles that made it over the snow patches just fine. No crampons required. I don't remember the name of the volunteer but he said that he lived in Hemet. He was a really nice guy.

I did the Devils Slide trail from Humber Park to the SJ summit today. The snow is totally inconsequential and almost all gone and the temps were quite warm. Couple of sprinkles on the way but not even enough for a jacket.

cata;yst81 - thanks for the nice comments. I'm the volunteer ranger you met up at Wellman's Divide last Saturday. My name is Nick. I've been volunteering for nine years up in the San Jacintos. Four years with the Forest Service out of Idyllwild and then the last five years with the State Park out of the tram. I've run across many of the participants on this web site. I saw many of you a week and a half ago (Saturday) at the 7,200 foot level on Skyline as I hung out with another volunteer (Tom Brooks) since we knew there would be a lot of traffic. I also volunteer as a member of RMRU. I've monitored this web site for several months now and I have to say that I am really impressed with the people who share their love of the San Jacintos on this site. I think you all are great in sharing your knowledge of these mountains. If you see a 6'2" slender volunteer out in the state park (with a pack that is way to big) ask if it is Nick and say hello. As a note, I have never hiked up Skyline, but perhaps I can tag along this fall with one of you so that I can say that I did it.

Hi Nick, we chatted on Skyline that Saturday at about 8.30am. Despite feeling tired when I ran into you and Tom, I remember thinking that I would rather have hiked up Skyline than be going down with that big pack on my back! I'm the English guy who was with Irish Mickey...
