Skyline May 9 - kinda hot - going elsewhere?

General Palm Springs area.

Howdy Ze,

Ah, good point :-)

I was planning to hike Big Iron with Tina, the Loveable Mountain Blond. When the weather got hot and Tina indicated we have to wear pants due to brush, I decided to postpone Big Iron until the weather is cool enough for pants (the dead of winter, perhaps).

Next Saturday, I'm planning to hike San Gorgonio via Vivian with Kathryn, Steve, Maria, Tina and whoever else wants to go.

On Memorial day, I'd like to do Walt's loop from the tram.

Ellen

I think next Saturday is Memorial Day.

What is "Walt's loop from the tram?"

Hey Z,

We decided it may be too hot and will probably wait for you to go up so we will have a bigger group, this is hoping you will go again in the near future.

Howdy Z,

You're welcome on my permit anytime :-) We're meeting at the Mill Creek Ranger Station at 5 AM. I estimate we'll start hiking from the Vivian creek trailhead at 5:30.

Howdy HJ and Florian,

"Walt's loop" (since he told me about it first): Tram to Wellman's to Saddle Junction to Willow Creek Crossing over Hidden Divide back to tram. 13 miles?

The loop can be extended by going from Saddle Junction to Chinqaupin Flat with a return by Law's camp before heading up Hidden Divide.

I know that Grandmaster Perry (and other runners/fast hikers) do a much bigger loop from the tram. I figure Walt's loop on Monday will be enough for me after doing Vivian to San G on Saturday.

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

I did that loop three times last summer, twice how you described and once in the opposite direction and added the peak. It's a really nice hike with a good mix of vistas and effort required. I had Walt's loop at 10.7 miles and Walt + peak at 15.5 miles...

Oh, OK, yes, a very nice loop.

I was wondering if anyone were talking about the "grand tour loop" (tram to SJ Pk to Little Round Valley to PCT to Saddle Jct and then returning over Hidden Divide through Laws). I've done it as an overnighter but I bet some of the trail runner types could do it in a day.
