Friday, May 8th, Skyline

I am going to hike the Skyline trail on Friday, May 8th. I will go at least to the tram, and maybe to the top if I feel up to it. I would really, really like someone to go with me! I plan on starting at 4:30am from the museum parking lot. I have not hiked this one before, and would really love company. I have one guy who is interested, but he has been ill. If I cannot find someone, is the trail well enough marked for me to follow? I hike a lot around Las Vegas, and can do pretty good in the desert, but I don't want to be stupid.

Some people get lost near the end of the traverse as you approach the big rock (Coffman's Crag). The "trail" appears to dead-end at a creek bed, but you climb the boulders a very short distance and you'll see it pick up again on the right side of the creek bed.

As long as the snow is gone the trail is pretty evident except in 3 areas.

A couple minutes past the first set of picnic tables (25 minutes from the museam) some folks have followed the trail south down towards Ramon Rd. Its a really bad way to start a long hike.

Up above flat rock near 6500ft there is a flat plastic trail marker about 4ft tall. As you hike up to it the trail turns hard left or south and proceeds over a downed pine tree before proceeding up. Several people have walked past that plastic marker and attempted to force a trail along a very steep traverse. The traverse they thought they were on is really up another 1500ft or so.

After that the only spot is where Perry called going up at Coffman's. The traverse just sort of fades out and you need to start going up. The trail gets a little sketchy but up is the right answer each time you lose it. Attempting to walk around Coffman's will require a flotation device or wings.
