I visited on Wednesday during the insurance meeting. The GM stated that they shut down in the past before, but never have they shut down prior to an event, which kept people from being stranded, just as they were on April 3rd of this year.
Basically we have a plan for high winds now. We can stay open as long as possible to keep guests moving up and down the attraction, but narrowing down an event to a two hour window could be good and gain trust from the guests to the mountain safety measures.
Guests that are stranded may not want to return if they don't trust forecasts for the mountain or events. They were not happy on April 3rd I was told, when they were stranded from 12pm to 8pm from high winds.
So combining a safety plan, but still keep the revenue flowing for the day till the tme to shut down is the goal. All businesses like to keep the revenue flowing, and shutting down is never good, however I was proud that they called me and asked how sure I was, and what time window would the event hit. They took the data I gave them and formed a time to get people off the mountain and shutdown or they would have been there almost all night. It showed they wanted safety first, which I was really happy to see.
When I went on Wednesday I took the tram up with the officials to see the terrain and slope features. I needed the length of slope and angle of it and with that I am developing (which is almost done) a wind gust formula for the powerful and damaging down-sloping winds off the Eastern slope of the mountain.
Not to mention it was my first time experiencing a -6F wind chill. My ears were frozen shut in a minute of being at mountain station up at the weather station and cameras. Not use to that at all but it was an experience that is for sure.
