How long for Skyline to melt off?

General Palm Springs area.

No equipment. I'll do San G or San J with my running crampons, but they wouldn't really be good enough if it's actually icy, so I'll won't carry anything, then just cruise back down if it becomes dicey. I'm trying to decide between San G from SF or Skyline this weekend. Either way, it looks like it's going to be a nice one. You going to be out?

I really feel that there is more snow in the trees than is easily passable this weekend without the use of crampons....and foul language.

Well put.

Frustrations out in the wilderness. Over on the San Bernardino Peak Trail, about a mile before I get to Limber Pine Bench, I'll come around a bend and it will look like I'm right there. Faked out, I'll get all happy, only to find that I'm on the ridge before the bench and I still have a mile or more to go. I've taken to calling that ridge the Son of a Bench.

Z, if you end up on skyline this weekend maybe we'll run into each other. I'm thinking about going up again on sat morn. about 5, I'm taking micro spikes but may well end up turning left at the traverse again.

I'm going to be writing a full trip report, but a friend and I did C2C on thursday, and the snow starts around that first traverse before the switchbacks at about 7500 ft.

You definitely still need crampons, but the snow is in good condition....no post-holing at all. We continued on to San Jacinto peak...after round valley the snow starts to get a little less firm but really no issues. i didn't put my crmapons back on after the tram, and was so tired i couldn't imagine putting my boots back on....so we did the tram to Wellman Divide in our trail running shoes. No problem at all as long as you don't mind your feet getting a little wet.

All in all the trail was in great shape. Look forward to doing this again in the future. THanks so much to everyone on this site that added invaluable information (maps, GPS tracks, etc) to make for a great day.
