do i need a permit?

we're planning on hiking the pct from palms to pines highway to black mountain rd in the first week of june, should be a 1 nighter, spanning the first weekend in june. do we need to obtain a permit from the state to overnight in this section, if so would it be easy enough to do ,or do they run out quickly?

Yes you do need a permit but you can get it from the San Bernardino National Forest folks in Idyllwild as the PCT turns away from the State Park at "Strawberry Junction" and does not enter the State Park boundary unless you go that way. Call them at 909-382-2922 or 909-382-2933 and they will tell you how to get the permit.

You may want to check that Black Mountain Road is open as well as they lock they gate until the most of the snow melts. And you have to Huff it in or out an extra couple of miles.

That's a great section of the PCT, one of my favorites.

thanks for the info, we had a thru-hikers permit last year, but the apache peak fire had us going around, time to do some mopping up!
is there anyone in the area that would help with a carspot??

LMK when it gets closer. My father in law lives near the PCT and 74 and we go up there a lot. I may be able to help you out.

i'm thinking we could drop our rent a car somewhere at the north end that makes the most sense, then, if one or both of you would be so gracious to drop us at the southern trailhead on palms to pine it would be much appreciated, and deserving of nothing less than a meal at joses or someplace of your choice in idylwild.
we're not counting on black mountain road being open and don't mind walking down it, as we walked up it to resume our northward trek last may.

Black Mountain Road will most probably be open. They usually open it by at least Memorial Day.
