MSR Lightning Ascents

Postby Ellen » Fri Feb 20, 2009 11:45 am

Howdy Kathy,
I second Karen's recommendations for the MSR Lightning Ascents. Next to the microspikes, they're the best money I've spent recently on gear.

Lance and I will be heading up the San Bernardino peak trail tomorrow before daybreak and I'll post a trip report.

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

Thank you all for the comments on the photos. I used a Canon 40D with a 24-105 F/4L IS and Circular Polarizer.

Looking forward to going up again........

Terrific High Quality Pics!

No wonder you watermarked them. Best pictures of Mark I've ever seen...

Well, the MCR Lightning Ascent's I ordered were delivered and I'll be shipping them back. They don't look like they'll work for me. I don't like the shape or the crampon system on them - it's not as agressive as on my Atlas shoes and I don't trust that the outer serrated rim will make up for the lack of agressive crampons. I'll stick with my Atlas snowshoes for now and I might end up buying the either the newer Elecktra 12's or the BC 24's if I see them on sale somewhere.

I bought a pair of MSR Lightning Ascents two years ago. I carried them on my pack on a few hikes but I didn't encounter enough deep, soft snow to need to use them until this year. I really like them! On two trips to San J this winter these snow shoes surprised me by just how steep of an angle they would hold me on.

I'm back to thinking about trying out the MSR Lightning Ascents to see how they work out - maybe looks are deceiving. I would have bought them at REI where I could return them after I used them, but they didn't have them instock. Oh well, I guess I can sell them on ebay if I don't end up liking them.
