Are those MSR snowshoes? If so, how do you like them? I have a pair of Atlas snowshoes that I've had for a few years and they've been good, but lately I've had more problems with snow balling up on the crampons. Is that much of a problem with those MSR snowshoes? I'm thinking of making some anti-balling plates out of the plastic from a milk container. I know people do this with their crampons sometimes instead of buying the ABS plates and it sounds like it works okay.

Kathy W - snowshoes--- we were all wearing MSR Lightning Ascents that day...excellent traction going up hill, they have an elevator bar for steep sections and no problems with clumping snow on the bottom. Last sunday i used them going up SJ - again in soft snow - no clumping. I know what thats like - since I used to get that with my crampons until I bought the ABS plastic thing for the bottom.

Mark: Thanks for the info. Atlas also has the heel lifts on their new models, but they don't make the women's 25" snowshoe like I have anymore - just 22" and 27" (too small or too big for my use). 22" would be okay for day trips, but with camping gear on my back they are just too small. I didn't think I'd be buying new snowshoes for a while, but I just might.

Kathy--I got my MSR Lightening Ascents 25s about a month ago and have used them twice (heading to Mammoth area this weekend) LOVE THEM!!! Had the Atlas before and there's not comparison. The Atlas always seemed to kick up snow onto my rear end, making my posterior cold. MSR rocks!! No snow balls, very light, easy on/off, great grip and the magic elevator lifts make steep hills so much easier. I found some at a great price from Herman's Hut (an outfitter in No Cal). Check them out. You'll love them too. Happy hiking!
