Devils Slide and South Ridge Conditions

Postby hvydrt » Sat Jan 31, 2009 6:13 pm

I intended to hike up the south ridge trail to Tahquitz, but found the gate at Tahquitz View & 5S11 closed this morning. The gate wasn't locked, so I drove up to see why it was closed. The forest service is clearing a bunch of trees and and other debris back there. I decided to take the Devils Slide trail rather than take a chance of getting my truck locked in.

Devils slide is mostly snow free until about 7500 feet. After that it was very icy in a few sections. From saddle junction south on the PCT, coverage is good with some ice. From the PCT to the peak is very icy and exposed.

Well the South Ridge Trail is closed, along with the Marion Mountain Trail. According to the ranger station, they are supposed to be closed until mid-April. I was going to hike the Marion Mountain Trail, but since it was closed, choose to go up Humber Park to SJ (made it to Marion but not SJ).
