That is about the best and most concise Skyline advice that I've seen. Very well done.

Most of you probably know about the "10 Essentials," but at the risk of putting everyone to sleep, I'll list them below. The Mountaineers (the group that compiled the list) recommends that each and every person carry all ten.
1. Map (yes, even if you have a GPS)
2. Compass (yes, even if you have a GPS)
3. Flashlight (or headlamp)
4. Sun Protection, especially sun glasses
5. Extra Clothing (enough to survive the night), especially rain/snow gear
6. Extra Food and Water (food particularly important for warmth in winter)
7. Matches (or a lighter; better yet, bring both)
8. Fire Starter (tinder), e.g. candle, vaseline impregnated cotton balls, fire "paste," etc.
9. Knife (or a multitool such as a Leatherman)
10. First Aid Kit

Commonly added items:
11. Whistle
12. Shelter (Space blanket, bivvy sack, etc.)
13. Signal Mirror
14. Duct Tape
15. Insulating Pad (in winter)

Pretty nifty how I was able to get that photo on there eh Jim ?

I always have a whistle, but dang if I don't always forget the duct tape.

Dear Hike,

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I think you and your friend showed tremendous personal responsibility out there. I especially liked your safety contingency of hourly calls to your wives.
