Add a Mt. Baldy Section?

Postby Perry » Thu Jul 20, 2006 9:35 pm

I'm assuming the reason people would say "yes" is because having a forum dedicated to Baldy is a convenient way to find out about snow and ice conditions.

I'm assuming the reason people would say "no" is because these other message boards already have people discussing Baldy, and another forum might make things more complicated.

Mt Baldy Message board

Postby Cy Kaicener » Fri Jul 21, 2006 3:40 am

YES - The area with the greatest number of hikers does not have its own message board and forum. Its spread out on too many other message boards.

I have mixed feelings about a new forum for the San Gabriels. There is no obvious reason for the San Bernardinos and San Jacintos, but not the San Gabriels, to have their own message boards. However, I am concerned that a proliferation of boards will dilute the existing ones.

There is a lot of posting on Mt. Baldy at http://www.mt-whitney.info/. I have made and read many posts there. since December, I have participated in three Baldy group hikes that originated there. I suggest giving http://www.mt-whitney.info/ a try for a while before starting yet another board.

Baldy Board

If starting up a Baldy Board will dilute the others, then why not just get rid of all of them with the exception of one? Baldy deserves its own site, but why not make it a San Gabrial Mountains site, with Baldy as its main focal point. Just my 2 cents worth.

The poll shows a trend towards "yes," but only six people voted! At the moment it appears that Mt-Whitney.Info is the #1 place to go for Baldy information. It's counter-intuitive to visit a "Mt Whitney" message board, but that's where people are going. Probably the simplest thing to do is for anybody with a Mt. Baldy web page to link to http://www.mt-whitney.info/viewforum.php?f=24 That way the word would get out, and more people could find out about ice conditions this next winter and spring....

After careful consideration, it seems simplest and most functional to have some form of board that would come up in a google search of "Mt. Baldy" or "San Gabriels", and that would be most reasonably a board (or section of a board with searchable characteristics) dedicated to specifically that area.

That being said, I would think that the administrator who is going to be putting in the volunteer effort would be the person with the most valuable opinion. Ultimately, I believe the board would grow, just as the San J board has grown, and become a valuable resource that is readily available to anyone interested - knowing to look it up on the Whitney board is not obvious at all.

My vote is yes.

Yes for me too. Perry might be on the Mt Baldy Labour Day race up on Monday.
He is the one we have to persuade to make this a reality. A couple of years ago he was second or third in this race in a hair over one hour. Awesome dude!
