Wilderness Ethics

More than twenty years ago, Laura and Guy Waterman wrote a book by this title, that is as fresh today as when its ink was wet. I found a copy at REI recently. It addresses many of the topics we discuss here: trails, leave no trace, search and rescue, gear.

Trigger warning: Laura and Guy often do not express majority opinions and some of what they write may offend people with different opinions about wilderness and hiking. Much of what they have written may be unsettling to some of us. On the other hand, it may be liberating to others.

Wilderness is not a "safe space" for anyone. It manifests danger. This book is like that. It draws in the manifest danger, and explores our relationship with wilderness. It explores who we are and where we live, and, of course, of how to live.

Has anyone else here read the book?
