Proportional Pack Weight - How much is too much?

How much should your pack weigh in proportion to your body weight? What's reasonable? What's excessive?

I try to develop some "ground rules" for how much a person should carry based on their body weight. See: Proportional Pack Weight.

Jim,

I've read 10% body weight for the kids, not sure about adults. As light as possible is what I aim for, so for me 19 pounds which I can usually get under unless its a longer trip or I have the kids with me.

Interesting. Hadn't thought about it, but it makes sense that it would be less for kids.

I've been getting out for about 22 lbs (including food, fuel, and water) for a solo weekend trip lately. Getting it under 20 lbs is pretty darned good. 8)
