Snowshoeing boots?

Postby Ulysses » Fri Dec 26, 2014 2:57 pm

Looking for some guidance on gear for snowshoeing in the San Jacintos. I'm optimistic that we'll get some snow this season, and I've read many of the other board members great trip reports in the past so I've decided this is the year I'm going to try snowshoeing. From what I've read the MSR Lightning Ascent seems to be the favored snow shoe for the steep terrain in this area. What about a boot? Most likely I would be starting on the south side of the mountain at Deer Springs where I would be on dirt for the approach. Do most folks use a full mountaineering boot or just a waterproof hiking boot? Do you recommend a boot that is crampon compatible? Any suggestions for a boot?

Thanks 2600fromatari. I think I'd like to have a pair of mountaineering boots for the versatility, but there seems to be a big difference in the price.
