I've never made coffee while hiking but for camping i've always found anything besides plain old instant coffee just too messy. Always having grounds (and a filter if using a simple drip funnel) to dispose of. Now whenever i taste instant coffee i equate it with camping and always brings back good memories.

Heh, no cream. But i do put sugar in instant camping coffee. Seems to help add a bit of body to it. Real coffee at home i drink straight.

I buy good whole beans (usually from a local roaster) and grind them as I use them at home, but instant coffee and powdered cream is a lot easier when backpacking or car camping. I don't stop and make coffee when I day hike. I bought a special filter for use when car camping, but after a couple of trips dealing with the messy grinds was too much for me and I was back to instant coffee for car camping.

Starbucks Via is pretty good for an instant coffee - I like the Italian Roast.

I tried the same thing but found filters and presses are just too much mess when camping. Actually more often then not in warm weather camping i just mix instant coffee with cold water in the morning and don't use stove at all.

I do sometimes bring a canned Starbucks or Mr. Brown on hikes.
