Gels or creams containing aminophylline (an asthma drug) are also promoted for spot reduction. Preliminary research suggested that treatment with an aminophylline cream reduced thigh circumference by about 1 cm (1/2 in.) — an amount so slight it would be impossible to detect (Greenway, et al., 1995; Tufts Univ. Diet & Nutrition Newsletter, 1994).
Later research did not corroborate these findings (Collis, et al., 1999). In 2004, the Federal Trade Commission charged that ads for Dermalin,® Cutting Gel,® and Tummy Flattening Gel® made unsubstantiated claims that these products caused rapid and visibly obvious fat loss in areas of the body to which they were applied.
The Federal Trade Commission has identified 7 Red Flags for Bogus Weight Loss Claims:
• Causes loss of 2 lb or more a week for a month or more without diet or exercise
• Causes substantial weight loss no matter what or how much the consumer eats
• Causes permanent weight loss (even when the consumer stops using product)
• Blocks fat or calorie absorption to enable consumers to lose substantial weight
• Safely enables consumers to lose more than 3 lb per week for more than four weeks
• Causes substantial weight loss for all users
• Causes substantial weight loss by wearing the product or rubbing it into the skin.

During the interview, I noted that if indeed the caffeine-laced bike shorts caused spot reduction, what would happen to the wearer's "nether regions." Would these shrink as well

Lori and the camera man cracked up. Of course, that part of the interview couldn't be broadcast.
