If he was headed "down the Vivian Creek trail" as described, then he would be closer to Forest Falls than Angeles Oaks.

It's in the SGW. Turn off of 38 onto Valley of the Falls Dr just as though you were going to go to the Vivian Creek Trailhead, but instead, look for a signed turnout on your left after Forest Home Retreat Center. If you get to the Fire Station in Forest Falls, you've gone too far.

A? NOT B? B being the pack trail. A, being the unnamed trail.

FIGHT ON, your map link points to locations on the north side of SGW. Momyer is on the south side of SGW, almost within sight of Vivian. What did you mean?

The Momyer Trailhead is on the left as you approach the Vivian Creek trailhead on Valley of the Falls Road in Forest Falls. I have walked between the trailheads on the road several times in finishing up 9 Peaks hikes and the distance is less than 1.5 miles.
