Are you talking about the summit plaque? The stuff on the summit is pretty solid and there's not a lot to burn there. I'd be very surprised if they got burned enough for anyone to notice.

I was listening to the radio on the way to work. They said the fire was at the 7000' mark.

He may have been talking about the cute little bear flat sign.

Yeah, major bummage. Some nice trees in that canyon. :(

Well, I suppose fire is part of the life cycle. That area hasn't burned in 25 years if I'm understanding correctly. Maybe this burn will prevent a worse one later on? Small consolation, but there you have it.

I just hope they don't close the trail to protect me from myself because as we all know, hikers don't have any brains and can't possibly make a good decision based on the situation on the ground and their level of fitness and skill. A blanket, one size fits all, solution is best. After all, if we let people think for themselves, then where would be? Probably we'd be a lot more productive, common sense based society -- now we wouldn't want that now would we.

Hiking areas

Postby tkvance » Wed May 14, 2008 12:56 pm

I'm planning on doing Baden-Powell, Throop, Burnham peaks this weekend.

Any word on fire threats or trail closures in those areas?

You probably know this, but Angeles Crest Hwy is closed from Islip Saddle to around Vincent Gap. The trail was in good shape as of last September. The only thing to watch out for is the lurking killer: icy snow.
