2019 JMT trip

Postby Ellen » Thu Aug 29, 2019 7:55 pm

Howdy All :)

Sister Sally and Miracle Marilyn are in Iceland hiking and touring. On Labor Day, I leave from Happy Isles and head south on the JMT. My itinerary (16 days) is:

Day 1 (9/2) – Camp after Sunrise (15 miles)
Day 2 (9/3) – Evelyn lakes junction (29.5 miles)
Day 3 (9/4) – Garnett lakes junction (45.3 miles)
Day 4 (9/5) – Reds Meadows (58.7 miles) Food pick-up
Day 5 (9/6) – Virginia lake (74.6 miles)
Day 6 (9/7) – Edison junction (87.6 miles)
Day 7 (9/8) – Camp after going over Seldon pass (103 miles)
Day 8 (9/9) – Evolution meadow (115 miles). Food pick up at Muir Ranch
Day 9 (9/10) – Stars camp (131.5 miles)
Day 10 (9/11) – Deer meadow creek crossing (143 miles)
Day 11 (9/12) – Main South Fork crossing (155 miles)
Day 12 (9/13) – Woods creek junction (167 miles)
Day 13 (9/14) – Charlotte lake junction (177.6 miles).
Day 14 (9/15) – Shepherd pass junction (192)
Day 15 (9/16) – Artic lake outlet (203)
Day 16 (9/17) – Whitney Portal (218)

My last two JMT trips took several days longer, so I expect this trip will be closer to 17 days. Friends are hiking in to resupply me at Charlotte lake -- I'll be there by September 15 at the latest.

On a sad note, I sent my beloved Sheltie Callie over the Rainbow Bridge yesterday morning. She started having problems last Thursday. Took her to the vet on Thursday and Saturday. On Monday, I left her with the vet for blood work. The horrible phone call no vet wants to make and no fur parent wants to hear -- your dog is dying (kidney and liver failure). Kept her hospitalized with catheter hydration to see if that helped (treatment similar to dialysis) for two days -- she continued to deteriorate and I didn't want her to suffer any longer.

Packing for the JMT is a good distraction and I look forward to finding solace in the Sierra.

From the heart,
Ellen

My good friend Ellen, I am sorry for your loss and my heart goes out to you.

Your pictures stir my memories with remarkable clarity...I grew up with a Siamese cat and Collie who were best friends. :) My kitty used to get beat up by other cats and he would jump over our back yard fence as he was chased by big burly bully cats. They would follow in hot pursuit and our Collie would, shall we say, begin instructing the other cat in proper behavior. No cats were actually injured, but several got a pretty good nip in the hindquarters before they could make a hasty exit. We would laugh and enjoy such a seemingly improbable friendship. Good times watching those two together. Looks like yours shared a close friendship as well. Glad your Sheltie Callie had many good years with your family. Hope you find fun, adventure and consolation in the wilderness. I'll be watching your progress as you go.

Hey! The tracking petered out at day 5 and never picked back up again...be sure to post when you get a chance and let us know you're back and safe and sound. You should be back today so I'm looking forward to good news and beautiful pictures!

Zip,

Ellen was at Charlotte Lake last night. The map does not name the lake, but Mt. Bago is at the south west end of the lake, seen when you zoom it in a few times. I think not all the check-in's are shown for some reason, you have to look at the dates. She is running behind schedule, but it was an aggressive schedule. Hope there were no problems with her resupply at Charlotte Lake.

Looks like Ellen hiked from Charlotte Lake to the Onion Valley trailhead today, via Kearsarge Pass, to resupply, rest in Independence, or end the hike.

Ellen Coleman
18 hrs
At Whitney Portal. Came out over Kearsarge — got a ride from Onion Valley with a trail angel. Staying in Lone Pine tonight at Whitney Hostel, home tomorrow. The cold weather (frost bitten hands), loneliness (family, friends) and grief (my beloved Sheltie Callie) were overwhelming. On the positive side, I learned a lot about myself and my limitations

Thanks, Cy. I was wondering what the issue was, and this relieves various potential concerns. The Sierras can be much lonelier, and the nights much colder, after Labor Day, and this was weeks, not days alone. Don't know how accurate the map and SPOT are, but the last location showed Ellen down the road a little from the parking area, as though she was not able to pick up a ride at Onion Valley, and was walking down the road.
