Open San Gorgonio wilderness!!!

Postby Ellen » Wed Aug 01, 2018 4:59 pm

Howdy fellow hikers :)

I want to thank fellow Riverside resident Steve McElroy for sharing the article by Jim Mathews in the Victorville Daily Press (link to article below) regarding the closure of the San Gorgonio wilderness.

http://www.vvdailypress.com/sports/2018 ... ate=ampart

The Cranston fire in the San Jacinto wilderness was much worse and temporary closure is only to the end of August. I do not understand why the forest service is so quick to shut down access to San Gorgonio for an indefinite time period.

I will be contacting Jody Noiron (San Bernardino National Forest supervisor) at jnoiron@fs.fed.us

She can also be contacted via the website at: https://www.fs.usda.gov/contactus/sbnf/ ... /contactus

Thanks for posting that Ellen. I agree, it should be open by now. BTW, I've always liked Jim Matthews' reporting. :)

Howdy Z-dude and all :)

I think Jim Mathews has made excellent points. I shared the link to his article on my FB page and have received interesting responses. Most have favored re-opening trails that are not affected by the fire -- Southfork and perhaps Forsee. Interesting reading at https://www.facebook.com/ellen.coleman.524

I will write a letter to Jody Noiron and post it on this site. In discussing this with friends, I'm also considering starting an on-line petition at www.change.org and submitting it to Ms. Noiron.

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

Thanks for the post Pi!

I haven't been to Aspen Grove since the Lake Fire. Gotta go check out the regrowth there - I hear Aspens grow back astonishingly fast. Sure hope so.

the trail down is still closed, i believe that burn was most severe.
but you can take the aspen grove trail up to fish creek as I know you are fond of!
I've been riding up each week since 1N05 opened earlier this summer.
at ground level, i'm sure there is plenty of growth but the canopy is still a burnt bunch of sticks over there.

just don't expect too much, i wasn't all that impressed with the regrowth myself.
it's a delicate and damaged area IMO.

they must have just opened up without replacing all the burned signs.
the sign at the highway was taken down, the one that indicated Fish Creek etc.
i wonder if they'll put it back up. all the TH signs were burnt sticks as of last month.
