The Bakersfield Californian, LA Times and numerous other news sources reported two dozen rescues and several deaths on the Kern River over the holiday weekend. One source said that the flow rate is ten times higher this year than last year and way above average.

I live 300 yards from the Kern and I've never seen it this vicious and fast. Stay out, stay alive.

It is usually out of towners from the Greater LA basin that do not respect the river, and drown. When you live on its flanks you hear about the deaths each year and you don't dip a toe in until it calms down.
