Mt. San Jacinto Outdoor Recreation

Anybody been to the peak since the snow? Any pics?

I'm thinking about going up Saturday from the north side, so any word on the conditions (via Dry Lake) would be much appreciated.

Kathy! How about the conditions on the way up. Did you go up the ravine after SF Meadows, or did you follow the trail as best you could? How deep was the snow? Is it all powder, or is it a bit more consolidated? Did you go further than Dry Lake?

Sorry about the barrage of questions, but I'm trying to see if a summit attempt is feasible. If the snow is too powdery, I'll maybe go somewhere else. But if it's consolidated and firm enough for snow shoes, then a peak trip would be wonderful.

Zip: It was soft fluffy snow and anywhere from about 2 inches to maybe 8 or 10 at the deepest, but mostly under 6 inches. There wasn't enough snow in the lower part of the ravine to go that way yet and the trail was easy to follow because the snow wasn't that deep and others had gone that way before packing it down a bit. The trail will melt out more as the week goes on but it might end up with some icy patches - hard to tell. I didn't see footprints going to Dollar Lake or past Dry Lake - I think the very cold and stormy weather last weekend probably kept people from heading up higher. I carried snowshoes on my back all day and didn't need them. I doubt that what benefit the snowshoes might bring up higher would make it worth carrying them but I could be wrong.

It's shorter to go to the summit via Dollar Lake and then you can go over Jepson from up above Dollar Lake. I suppose I'd carry crampons and an axe if I were to go higher than Dry or Dollar Lake.

Neg, didn't make it up to the peak.

On our second day the weather was still bad and we ran out of time.
Tried to board a bit but there wasn't enough coverage to board down.
Lots of submerged hazards, got a nice gouge in my deck.


Headed back down as the weather was starting to clear.
Looking to head back up there very soon.
