Baldy Conditions?

Postby mattytreks » Thu Apr 07, 2016 11:37 am

Anyone happen to have been up Baldy recently?

Was thinking of heading up this weekend but unsure if I need to bring my poles and spikes...

Thanks!

Howdy OHiker :)

Last Sunday, I didn't need microspikes but used my poles. The National Weather Service is predicting rain/snow with increasingly cold temperatures:

Excellent, thanks Ellen! I'll keep my eyes on the weather in hopes of attempting a summit on Sunday.

Only thing now is, I've seen conflicting reports on whether Old Baldy Trail (from Baldy Village) is actually open or not...one site I saw said it was; the other said no.

The Baldy village trail is open 8) However, the Baldy weather report is looking even worse with chances for flash flooding (why the trail was closed) and snow.

Beautiful now. Booked up there this early a.m. New snow on north side. Frozen dwarf trees & cloud cover looked otherworldly! Wind was whipping cold though.Lots of folks later on.

Sounds excellent, thank you for the report!

I ended up not going in early April, but definitely will be going this Saturday 5/7 via Baldy Village/Old Baldy Trail. Will bring the spikes and poles just in case.
