DC10 and Wrightwood fire

Postby arocknoid » Mon Aug 12, 2013 8:41 pm

Hikes have been same-o same old, with curlyhorns, deer, snakes, flora as usual, so I've refrained from posting pics. This was the first time I'd seen a DC10 dropping phoscheck whilst on a regular ragtime ramble. (Go, go, Radding! ;)

So here'za few pics:

Looking north from the Devil's Backbone, I spotted the jet as it made a high pass, scouting the area before making a wide turn for the drop run. The was no lead spotting plane for him:

The jet abruptly emerged from the smoke wall, low to the ridgeline (and perplexing the camera re-focus/exposure, grr):

Payload on target!

Shadowed on chaparral:

He headed NNW in the general direction of Mojave Airport til he disappeared from view, and did not return. Later I learned that this DC10 had been redirected from the Power Fire, and then went to Pocatello, Idaho, after this sortie. (The other DC10 was engaged at the Silver Fire.)

A prop-powered partner (sans strafe run):

Another red flyer, glimpsed in silence a few minutes later:

A few shots, at and near summit. To the east and south, one can see smoke from the Silver Fire:

Stay safe out there.
And remember ( I have a 40 year old USFS poster for this!) "No smoking, or Smokey Bear will CRUSH your BUTT!"

Great shots, arocknoid! I don't know much about the Wrightwood fire except that it's been going on since at least last Friday (because Ellen posted a pic of it from Baldy on FB.) Got any info on it, such as size and what has been burned?

See this information here

The community of Wrightwood has it's own discussion forum. They tend to keep things up to the minute.

Fairly sure they have this one completely under control
