Baldy Duo + Lost SPOT
Howdy All
Hiked up Baldy via Register and down the Bowl yesterday. It was a beautiful, peaceful climb -- I didn't run into anyone going up and had the summit to myself for a half hour
Even the descent was nice -- just enough folks for a quick "Hi and have a good hike."
When I got home, I discovered that I'd left my SPOT on Baldy in the large rock shelter (south and east of the metal summit plaque). Well, shoot. I was going to join the San Jacinto hiking club for Tahquitz or Strawberry. However, the chance of thundershowers was high. Perry A and I opted to head back up Baldy.
We had a great hike up to the summit and then things got weird. I asked the four guys sitting in the rock shelter where I'd been if they saw my SPOT. They pointed over to another rock shelter. I went over there -- it was an orange water bottle. Went back, described the SPOT and asked them to stand up so I could check in the rocks behind them. One guy refused to move his sit pad -- he said he would know if he was sitting on it. These are the same bozos who thought I was talking about a water bottle.
Then on the way down, I ran into a gazillion people on the Bowl trail -- perhaps a team building exercise of sorts? Checked the Ranger Station -- no SPOT. The woman volunteer ranger didn't know what I was talking about. Once I described it, she said she would know if she saw one. That puts her ahead of the morons on the peak.
On the humurous side, I ran into two women who asked why I didn't have on purple socks (I was wearing a mauve shirt, shorts and carrying a mauve bandana). Guess someone should put the word out to Smart Wool. I have enough nicknames, don't need to be Barney.
Rant over, Ellen out
