Nice! That was my first Sierra backpack ever -- back in the 1970's. Great stuff!

Yeah, everybody I've talked to has been reporting serious, almost daily T storms, sometimes accompanied by marble-sized hail. The hail has come down in such quantities that it covers the ground like snow. A couple of folded up socks under one's hat does wonders when the hail is coming down hard. In hail storms, I've sure benefitted from a hat that offered some protection to my ears. A baseball style cap just doesn't cut it.

An early, early start is perhaps the order of the day. Be safe!

My wife and I ran into Ellen and Sally on the south side of Muir Pass on Thursday afternoon. It was great getting to finally meet them both. We didn't socialize for long as we were both needing to find a camp spot. Hopefully we will get a chance to hike with them this winter when we are in the desert.

The reports of afternoon T-storms were not exaggerated. We experienced the fun of them on 5 of the 8 afternoons of our trip from Red's Meadow to Bishop Pass. Luckily only once did we get the hail treatment. On Wednesday afternoon we made an emergency bivouac alongside the trail near South Evolution Lake. We were trying to make it to Sapphire when the hail started. The good news is that the foul weather was predictable. One needed to be up and packing at first light and on the trail shortly because, unless you enjoy hiking in the rain, your hiking day was over no later than three.

Can't wait to hear about Ellen and Sally's trip .
