San Gorgonio Via South Fork Question

Hey all nice to be back with something to post. Ever since our last trip up San Jacinto via Marion Mountain Trail My hiking partner and I have been dying to hit up San Gorgonio. Long story short, we have decided spur of the moment to go attempt it this Tuesday, 06-19-2012, via the South Fork and Dry Lake Trails.

My Questions are just on permits. I know I need an adventure pass to park my car at the trailhead. I here these can be obtained in Big Bear or at a local REI. After that is taken care of I know that we will need permits to be in the SanG Wilderness. Are these permits self issued somewhere? I read something somewhere saying that you write up your permits somewhere near Poopout hill.

Anyways some clarification on the Permit system would be nice and greatly appreciated. It will be my first time in the San G Wilderness and I can't be more excited. Sure to be a nice Trip Report of the trail coming this way soon!

Thanks everybody!

Thanks so much that is of great help. Although i foresee one problem I wish I had known of, "Please allow a minimum of five days to process your permit". In case this form does not go through, are there any backup plans I could utilize to obtain permits by Tuesday? No self issue permits or permits I can pick up the day before or morning of at the Mill creek Station?

Thanks for the quick reply btw!

Cheers

Self-issue permits are available at the Mill Creek ranger station at the junction of hwy 38 and Bryant Street on your way up. Weekdays usually aren't a problem to get one the morning of your hike. Weekends not so much. I just hiked the Momyer trail on Thursday and there were South Fork permits available at 7:30a.

You can also get permits at the station near Barton Flats but not sure if they have self-issue nor sure what days they're open.

The Mill Creek station is closed on Tuesday, but like Florian said they usually leave permits out so you can get one. You should be fine for a mid-week hike.

We were planning at starting at around 4am on Tuesday. Is there any chance we can pick up permits on Monday at the Mill Creek Station?

4am start!? You think you're doing Skyline or something? :D

You can get one in person Monday afternoon at Mill Creek station.

Hahaha! Skyline... that made me laugh. Hopefully I'll be ale to give THAT a shot next year. We were just planning on staying out of some heat and maybe get a glimpse of the sun rising. Being 21 though, we'll most likely hit the snooze for an hour haha.

Thanks for all the help Florian, Make sure to check out my TR later this week!

4a might be a bit chilly, not to mention dark. I did the Momyer/Vivian loop on Thursday and started at 7:30a. Even for that longer loop with a lower starting elevation 4a would have been a bit early imo.

You'll love the South Fork. Will be looking for your TR.
