Memorable Memorial Day on Baldy

Postby Ellen » Tue May 29, 2012 9:17 am

Howdy All :)

Perry A, Cindy and I got an early start (6 AM) to beat the crowds. I carried an American flag bandana to honor those past and present who serve our country. Went up Register Ridge to the Devil's Backbone trail and bagged Harwood (Perry's first time). We enjoyed checking out the equipment (earthquake monitoring?) before heading up to the summit. Perry helped a couple of folks who wanted to descend the Bowl but were headed down the Backbone.

It was a beautiful morning -- no wind and not too hazy. Went down the Ski hut trail and encountered numerous folks, including Jackie Yaris' meet-up group. When we arrived back at Manker, it was a zoo. The forest service was ticketing cars without passes and servicing the scary, smelly porta potty. We were glad to be heading down the road before the masses.

I went to the Rancho REI to return some items -- the commotion in the store made Manker look tame by comparison. Finally got home and snuck in a nap before enjoying a sumptous Memorial Day barbecue at my sister's house.

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

Thanks for the report Ellen; glad you all had a good hike.

Waaay too crowded for my enjoyment, but the cool weather facilitated venturing to areas of the SG range with off-trail solitude. So it goes.

The (damaged) equipment you saw on Mt. Harwood is an EarthScope GPS Geosensor, a component of the Plate Boundary Observatory.

Some of the folks on these boards may have also come across another one of these units out in Mojave. (I have a pic of that one somewhere, from back when I was prepping for my 66 mile Mojave solo run :)

BTW the data link to the Earthscope unit on Mt. Harwood might be handy for folks hereabouts for the temperature info.

Temps are the blue line, with the scale in Celsius (on the right)

this is useful in conjunction with data from Baldy Notch instruments.

The "old" data format from Mt Baldy, which is no longer in use on their website; they now use bar graphs, with a 24 hr rolling data format which is less user-friendly for my synapses...
I find it helpful to use these in conjunction with the NOAA tools when preparing for departure. Course, it helps to have a bot to handle data grabs in absentia.

As there is only a green line (wet bulb) you know the humidity is 100%, otherwise red data points would also be present--above the green, of course.
