Caltopo - Interesting map resource
There's a very good free online map resource that was just pointed out to me - Caltopo.com. I don't know how I've missed it so far. It was originally developed by the Bay Area Mountain Rescue Unit.
The user interface is pretty minimalist but there are a lot of very cool features on it. I'm still figuring out all it can do. But for example you can have it display slope angle shading based upon steepness and overlaid onto USGS topos. Here's an example showing the slopes at Smith Water Canyon:

What's very nice is that after you setup a map to show what you want, you can export it to Google Earth of just email a link.
