Howdy All

After carrying needed items in my pack after hearing about all the trailhead robberies, I got careless and left my wallet and two sets of crampons in my trunk -- one set belonged to Janine

Nothing like coming back from a bone-jarring hike to discover that you've been shafted. I filed a police report.

Thanks to Janine and the folks at the Oaks restaurant for being so awesome -- YOU ROCK!!!

I am sorry to hear that Ellen.
Someone should invent a camera that secretly takes a picture when the trunk is forced.
Burglar alarms dont seem to deter the thief.

Can they put up like a wildlife motion camera there? Those things are not terribly expensive. Never heard of getting robbed of crampons either.

I've consoled myself before by saying "I guess that person needed it more than me". But i don't feel that way about crampons.

That guy is a jerk. At least be a decent person and leave the wallet. Such a pain to replace a license!

Yipes. That really sucks.

That's a high target area for the Local Low Life's!
It's a good distance back off the Highway, away from the AO store making it
ideal for break in's. Not to mention, how it's tucked way back from the few homes that are on the left and right sides of the dirt access road. With only one local Sheriff at any given time (Out of Yucaipa/residence in AO) it's almost a no brainer for Tweakers and Low Life's. Last year the same thing occurred in Forest Falls at the Vivian Creek Trail Head. They were finally caught and low and behold, they were locals from Forest Falls. Sorry to hear that it's happened again! Maybe Corgiman will chime in on his thoughts too.

Howdy All

There are tool marks (flat crow bar?) above my drivers side window -- looks like they dropped something in to open the door. Nothing was visible in the car. There was a silver Ford Explorer with tinted windows parked when we got to the trailhead -- that may have been the gutless wonder. On the way down, we saw a similar vehicle parked on the side of the road between the highway junction adn ranger station. We got the license plate and reported it to the sherriff.

The cards to my atm and credit cards are from Highlands and Redlands. Probably the same group of losers who've preyed on cars at that trailhead before.

Thanks to everyone for listening to me vent -- be careful out there.

This might sound extreme but one tactic I've used in the past is to leave the doors unlocked. You can also leave a note that says: "nothing in here to steal" with the doors unlocked. I've seen ppl do that in Hawaii.

The only downside to that is one time I had someone tell me that their doors were unlocked but the theif out or habit or whatever, just smashed the window anyway.

My "Trail Wallet" is my license, one credit card and a $20 ($50?) for gas between them, sealed in a plastic snack size baggie. Everything else stays safe at home.

I was doing that too, but then I started getting lazy and carrying my trail wallet for everyday use. My wife got on me for that one. She kept muttering something about "hiker trash."
