I thought I would share some pics of my trip up Mt. Whitney on 9/11/11! What a day it was! We got a little sample of just about every form precipitation that their is on earth! Our day started in the rain and ended with thunder snow!!! Here are some pics.

What was the total weight of gear you carried?

Hi MP, Great job doing Whitney in that weather! There were still a few remnants of the snow on the ground when Ellen and I went up on the 17th. Thanks for sharing your pics.

We traveled light I am not sure of our weight but less than 10 lbs. We carried 32oz of water and food for the day. Since we started out in cold rain we had all of our outerwear on from the start so no extra clothes in our packs. I used a SteriPen and refilled fluid along the way! Our saying is travel light and move fast!

Howdy MP :)

A belated congratulations on climbing Whitney in tough conditions. It looks like you're wearing trail runners  I've day hiked Whitney and been snowed on, rained on, etc. Couldn't even see the Owens valley or Kaweahs when I went with Indie Jack and Hengst Joe last year (first weekend in October). I was blessed with great weather when summiting on my two backpacking trips.

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

Excellent perspective for the date. Wish I'd thought of it.

Thanks Ellen it was a bit of challenge to say the least but we got it done without any regrets. I do all my hiking in trail runners because I like the fact that they allow me to be a little more nimble and light on my feet. On that day I thanked GOD for goretex socks! We got few comments from fellow hikers along the trail regarding our shoes but with goretex socks I think they perform better than boots!

My buddy Monty, seen in the photo posted by Hikin_Jim, was at the summit on 9/11/01 when he heard the news! He has been up every year since to take the American flag up. He was nice enough to let come along for the ride this year. Our plan for next year is to go up the mountaineers route and come down the portal trail.

P.S. Difficult things take time, the impossible takes just a little longer!
