Went up Shasta over the July 4th weekend. It was such a wonderful experience.

Here are some pictures. We were lucky. We went up in the early morning, starting at 3am and had hard ice all the way up. Then when we descended at 1pm we had soft slush and were able to glissade for several miles! It took us 10 hours to get to the summit, via Avalanche Gulch and just 3 hours to descend. It was a glissade of a lifetime!

Hi Kathryn,

All I can say is "Wow!" You're amazing, girl! (I'm sad to say that I have put away my crampons for the summer)

I wouldn't mind reading a full-blown trip report.

Thanks everyone!

For those who are interested in going up Shasta and have never done it, my friends made some videos that are informative and also show what it looks like there:

Super vid's of the summit, stopping before the top, and the Ranger Station(I guess). With all the tents on the slope of Shasta I've got a question.
Do you have to permit or hit the lotto to climb that bad girl? Is there a website like Mt. San Jac., Mt. San G. or Mt. Whitney for it? Sure did look like a Sherpa base camp in Nepal with all the tents.
 Congrat's to you and yours again on bagging Shasta.

Felipe,

A permit is required. You get it at the Mt. Shasta Ranger Station. It costs $20.00 and we bought it at the time of our climb. As far as I know there is no lottery. We just showed up and we were able to get a permit. There is no group permit. Even though we were in a group, each one of us had to have an individual permit. And I was checked for it twice by two different rangers near the summit.

I don't know of any web sites for it, but I figure there probably are somewhere. And I walked by that "base camp" and it was really cool. I wish we would have had sherpas!

I would definitely recommend this climb. It was a long drive, but well worth it!

There's a great web page for it on summitpost.org:

Its a standard crampon-&-ice-axe climb (yes, you do need both). If you hit the summit on a clear day its a pretty spectacular view.
