Lone Pine to Whitney Portal

Is there a trail that routes directly from downtown Lone Pine up to Whitney Portal? If so does anyone have details on it?

I was thinking of doing a Lone Pine to Mt. Whitney hike, then terminate back at Whitney Portal...

There is a trail from the Lone Pine campground (at 6000 ft) to Whitney Portal. I think it is about 4 miles one way. The Lone Pine campground is about 6 miles up the Whitney Portal road from Lone Pine.

Hmmm, might be fun. You could actually xc it to the bottom of the mountain, as the terrain is so open. I'd say a cold September morning might make it more fun since you wouldn't have to try and dress for 90 degrees and 30 degrees on the same outing. If you do it, post and let us know how it goes. That'd be some serious miles too, over 20 to the summit, plus 11 on the way back down to the portal.
