A few more for the list:

-Point Reyes National Seashore (visit during the week when the crowds are thinned out);
-Golden Gate National Recreation Area (?);
-Carrizo Plain National Monument (like Joshua Tree & Death Valley NPs, this is NOT recommended for an August visit!)

Aug 14 & 15 are on Sat & Sun respectively.

Whoops! Screwed that one up ; didn't look too closely and see the access was limited to certain parks/national monuments. Thinking about the last 'open' days when it was off-season and mid-week. They really don't need any more visitors at Point Reyes or the Golden Gate NRA on a summer weekend (maybe mid-week in the winter - both places re practically deserted).

FWIW: Going to Pinnacles Natl Monument in August is similar to Joshua Tree NP - way too hot !!!!
